Drawing water from the Waikato for Auckland’s water supply has caused some concern to say the least. The reasons are quite simple. Listed in 4 bullet points below is some of what goes into the river upstream of Auckland’s intake pipe.  The same could go for your water supply for your part of the country

  • Sewage is dumped into the river from many towns, some raw and untreated.
  • Over 450,000 cattle’s runoff goes into the river.
  • Nitrate runoff from fertilisers from the 100’s of farms

Contaminants in your water supply:

A range of pathogens can be found in bores and roof-collected tank rainwater in New Zealand including things like, Salmonella, E Coli, Campylobacter, Giardia and Cryptosporidium. The likely sources of these pathogens are faecal material deposited by birds, rodents, cockroaches, possums, dead animals and insects, either in the gutters or in the water tank itself.

In addition, a wide range of air pollutants may contain arsenic, heavy metals, pesticide residues or other chemicals used in Vineyards, Olive groves, Orchards,  harmful smoky residues from solid wood heaters, particles from lead-based paints, lead headed nails or flashing on older roofs and gutters can be washed into rainwater tanks.

Analysing the contents of some towns, tank and bore water can reveal a deadly cocktail of poisons and substances in minute traces that destroy healthy body cells. Ongoing allergy problems like skin rashes, dryness, and hyperactivity in children like ADHD can be caused through simple things like Chlorine and Fluoride in your drinking water. Skin absorption is another worry as even minute amounts collect in the body and cause harm from long term health issues.

Other town water supplies

Lake and river sources for water supply for our towns and cities in New Zealand could be very similar to that of Auckland’s Lakes and Waikato supply. Nitrates, Salmonella, E Coli, Campylobacter Giardia and Cryptosporidia, Dioxin and Lindane, DDT, 1080, Malathione and heavy metals can be found in varying amounts in all water supplies sources. Pathogens are faecal material deposited by birds, rodents, cockroaches and possums, and dead animals and insects, farming runoff and spraying, airborne particles, pest eradication and so on.

Chlorine:

The experimental use of chlorine began in the 1890's to combat water-borne diseases such as cholera and typhoid. It quickly gained wide acceptance because of low cost and high efficiency in killing just about everything hazardous in the water. Chlorine allowed population centers to spring up and thrive without any epidemic outbreaks.

The problem with chlorine is that many people around the world have concerns regarding the safety of drinking chlorinated water over the long term. Also, chlorine reacts with water-borne decaying organic matter like leaves, bark, sediment, etc to create a family of chemicals called Trihalomethanes and other highly toxic substances. Trihalomethanes, or THM's, include chemicals such as Chloroform, Bromoform and Ichlorobromethane, all of which are extremely carcinogenic even in the minutest amounts.

What Is Fluoride?

Fluoride is a waste product of the chemical fertilizer industry. Being intensely negative, it unlatches positive hydrogen bonds in enzymes and proteins. Most councils add at least 1 ppm of sodium fluoride or fluorosilic acid to the water supply, even though there has been evidence from around the world that at least 100 medical side effects from cancer to headaches are caused by fluoride in the water.

Cysts:

This group includes microscopic worms, parasites and protozoa. The biggest offenders are Giardia and Cryptosporidia which cause major diarrhea, dehydration, intestinal disorders and even death in people with compromised immune systems. Water experts estimate that over 63% of water problems in the Unites States today are directly caused by Giardia and Cryptosporidia.

Giardia is seven to fourteen microns in size and Cryptosporidium is from three to 5 microns in size. When the environment becomes inhospitable (like the presence of chlorine or the absence of water), both parasites can go into the cystic form (like a hard, round impermeable microscopic egg). The cyst form is chlorine resistant and very hard to kill.

The human body is over 70% water and to think that contaminants in our drinking water have little or no bearing on our short term and long term health picture is to ignore reality.

It's up to us to take personal responsibility to safeguard the water we use to drink and prepare our food.
